Lloyd McAlister started his law firm in Edmond in 1985, employing only himself and part-time secretary. Some questioned the choice of location for the new firm because at the time downtown Oklahoma City was the center of legal activities for central Oklahoma and Oklahoma was in the midst of the oil bust. Lloyd chose Edmond "to be close to home, family, church and schools." Prior to forming his own practice, Lloyd was associated with the Oklahoma City law firm of Crowe & Dunlevy. Edmond proved to be a fortuitous choice, meeting the personal objectives of Lloyd and his family in a community with a storied past and, as it turned out, an equally bright future.

Lloyd's wife, Karla, joined the new firm in 1986 after serving as an Assistant District Attorney for Oklahoma County and an Assistant United States Attorney. The two partners moved their offices in 1988 from the original Edmond location in Apple Village Square at 15th and Fretz to the current location at 15th and Broadway in the Kirkpatrick Bank Building .

The original focus for Lloyd McAlister in 1985 was estate planning for individuals and families. As the firm has grown, so has our focus.

Simply stated, McAlister, McAlister, & McKinnis P.C. helps individual families put their house, and their business, in order. We help our clients plan for challenges and crises in an effort to keep that house and/or business in order.

Growth has been evidenced by the addition of attorneys Todd McKinnis in 1994, Jon Austin in 2003, Brandon Baker in 2006, Terry Stokes in 2006, and most recently Aaron Parks in 2010.

Community involvement is a large part of the firm's personality. A member of the Edmond Chamber since early 1986, more than 20 years with the Chamber include Todd McKinnis serving on the board of directors from 1998 to 2004. Todd also served as Chairman the Board for the Edmond Chamber in 2003. The families of the firm's twelve employees are active in eight local churches. They have had family members as students in the Edmond public schools, Oklahoma Christian Schools and Christian Heritage Academy, as well as having served as teachers, guest lecturers or professors at the University of Central Oklahoma. Oklahoma Christian University, the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma City University, Rose State College and Oklahoma Christian School.

McAlister, McAlister, & McKinnis, formerly McAlister, McAlister, McKinnis & Tuggle was selected as the Edmond Small Business of the Year by the Edmond Chamber of Commerce in 2006. This award honors a small business that make outstanding contribution to the economy and community

The firm serves a diverse client base. Many clients are from Edmond, but others range from Alaska to Florida.

Game days likely produce an equally diverse set of loyalties at the firm as degrees have been awarded to members by Oklahoma State University, University of Texas, University of Oklahoma, Missouri State University and Oklahoma Christian University.
